School Building Leadership Advanced Certificate Overview

Mercy's 18-credit School Building Leadership Advanced Certificate program prepares practicing teachers and other eligible school personnel to be effective, motivated and visionary school building leaders. 

The program leads to certification in School Building Leadership.

Admissions Requirements

  • Master's degree
  • Initial or permanent certification in teaching
  • At least two years of teaching experience

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Some students may be eligible for the Educational Leadership Scholarship: $1,500 per term. Students will be automatically considered for this scholarship based on their GPA and do not need to apply separately for it.

Initial Eligibility for the Scholarship:

  • For applicants to the School Building Leadership Advanced Certificate, Educational Administration, and Educational Supervision program
  • 3.00 GPA from Undergraduate or Graduate Coursework

To continue receiving the scholarship each term: 

  • Must register for at least 6 credits per term
  • Must maintain a 3.50 GPA in the graduate program
  • Must file a FAFSA each year

  • EDSA 520 Curriculum and Learning: Theories into Practice | 3 credits
  • EDSA 535 Family and Community Engagement | 3 credits
  • EDSA 555 Educational Finance Management | 3 credits
  • EDSA 580 Clinic for School Administrators | 3 credits 
  • EDSA 590 School Building Internship I | 3 credits
  • EDSA 591 School Building Internship II | 3 credits

Graduates of the School Building Leadership Program will act with integrity and fairness, and in an ethical manner as they demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and dispositions: 

  1. Establish, articulate and sustain a culturally responsive, sustainable vision of student learning and professional growth that is shared and supported by stakeholders to become effective school building leaders. 
  2. Implement effective management of school operations and resources for a safe, effective and efficient learning environment. 
  3. Collaborate with family and community organizations to respond to diverse needs and mobilize community resources to promote school goals. 
  4. Understand, respond to and influence the larger social, cultural, legal and economic trends impacting the school. 

Certification requires successful completion of the Advanced Certificate in Educational Supervision program, a passing score on the NYS School Building Leadership Examination (Parts I & II) and on the Educating all Students (EAS Exam).
